Describing Acronis Online Backup Beta

Acronis is pleased to announce the upcoming Beta evaluation of our new product, Acronis Online Backup. Thanks for your interest in becoming a Beta tester!

The Beta program Phase 1 is scheduled to begin on July 8th of 2009. The Beta program Phase 2 is expected to begin later in July and last approximately four weeks. Both the betas will be available only in English.

Beta eligibility requirements:

To be eligible for participation in the Acronis Beta program, you must:

• Be willing to accept Acronis Beta agreement available
• Be able to install the Beta software within 5 days of receiving the link for downloading the Acronis Online Backup and continue testing throughout the period of the Beta program
• Be willing to provide weekly product feedback by email atihome2010-beta@acronis.com
• Agree to provide logs, configuration data and other diagnostic information as requested by Acronis Development and/or Support

Beta Schedule

We have scheduled a 6-week Beta program with the start of Beta on July 8th. During the Beta period, Acronis beta team will solicit feedback after the initial installation, and weekly thereafter through the end of the program.

Beta Phase 1 Features

Acronis Online Backup is a service integrated with Acronis True Image 2010 Home providing a single solution for all your data backup needs. It allows you to save your data off–site preventing from loss in case if your computer gets stolen or your house burns down. So the risk of data loss as a result of theft, fire, or other natural disasters is practically eliminated. And you can safely restore any files corrupted, lost or deleted on your computer.

The following is a partial list of the features and key technologies scheduled for release as part of the Acronis Online Backup. Depending upon the results of testing, Acronis could choose to remove any feature from the Beta and from the General Availability versions of Acronis Online Backup (AOB).

Note: For Beta Phase 1 Acronis Online Backup service will store all backups in a data center located in Germany. Data centers in the US and other geographies will be added in the future. We will notify you when new data centers are available. Be advised that you can restore your data only from a geographic location that you used for backup.

Features

Acronis Online Backup features include:

• Encryption of data and transfers between client and server: To protect personal information from falling into the wrong hands, Acronis Online Backup uses the industry-standard AES cryptographic algorithm for encrypting the files before their transfer to the online storage. In addition, Acronis Online Backup uses an encrypted channel for data transfers between clients and remote server.
• Discrete backup process: If a backup is stopped/interrupted for any reason, it won’t start over from the beginning. It will just continue on from where it got interrupted.
• Automated schedule and backup data categories: For instance, a user can schedule the backups to the online storage to be performed at a time that won’t interfere with their normal usage of the computer (e.g. at night or during the lunch hour). A user also given the option of selecting files based on data categories for backup. This makes it easier for the user to backup all files of a certain type e.g. their MS Word or Excel files, thereby relieving the user from the chore of hunting down the files all over the hard drive.
• Backup of multiple computers with one account: Opening a single Online Backup account allows the user to backup and restore files from multiple computers, depending on the selected Online Backup Plan. This also allows the user to view/restore files from all machines backed up under the same account on any machine being backed up under that account.
• New interface: Simple, easy to use interface makes backup and restoration of your files a breeze.

Key technologies

• Fault tolerance: The server side of Acronis Online Backup service uses the Reed-Solomon error correction algorithm and distributes the data between multiple storage servers to ensure data integrity even if some storage servers fail.
• Versioning: A user can retain multiple versions of the same file in Acronis Online Backup. This allows the user to return to a previous file version if changes in a file turn out to be erroneous. In addition, a user can automatically delete obsolete versions by setting appropriate storage clean-up options. Thus user is in control of how many versions they would like to retain on Acronis Online Backup.
• High availability: Online storage has availability of no less than "three nines" (99.9%) due to use of hardware and software redundancy.
